About the Argentine Tango Community in Winnipeg

The Winnipeg Argentine Tango Community is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development and promotion of a vibrant Argentine tango community in Winnipeg. All are welcome to attend the milongas, to learn, and to practice the Argentine tango in a friendly, informal, supportive atmosphere.

Argentine tango represents a unique sensuous, intimate, improvisational art form consisting of classical styles such as salon tango and close embrace as well as the modern, high-energy, style of stage performance tango. Included in the Argentine tango repertoire are literally thousands of moves and embellishments - a vast pool of kicks, turns, circles, poses, and pauses. Thanks to a tremendous revival in Argentine tango, it is now possible to share in the tango experience all over the world.

Originally founded by a small group of devotees learning the intricacies of tango from dedicated local teachers, the Winnipeg Argentine Tango Community now maintains links with organizations and instructors around the world. The hospitality extended by venues such as the Braemar Restaurant and Cabaret (2000-2004), the Winnipeg Press Club (2003-2005) and others in the tango community offering their time and talents have all contributed to the ongoing success of the group.

Several workshops are held annually in Winnipeg by reknown instructors from tango communities such as Montreal, Salt Spring Island (Mike and Beatrix), Buenos Aires (Roxana and Fabian, Miguel Angel Pla, Eduardo Saucedo, Kiki), and Istanbul (Metin Yazir). As well, our own local teachers have been practicing and studying the tango for a number of years. To experience this beloved art form in Winnipeg, you are welcome to join the Winnipeg Argentine Tango Community in our new home at Patricia's Dance Club, a large dance facility which opened in 2005, where classes and milongas are held on a regular weekly basis.
